The Nazi Officer's Wife
How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaustby Edith Hahn Beer with Susan Dworkin
I was very touched by this book. What an amazingly inspiring woman! Edith Hahn had so much courage, so much strength. I know in that same situation I wouldn't even have the strength to get though working on that asparagus farm. This story has made me evaluate my own life. I take so much for granted. I know we live in a different time than that of the Holocaust, but it made me realize I could be doing so much more; with my life as well as others. I get so caught up in my own live that I don't even think of what others might need. I want to contribute more. In the book Edith talks about doing her part in healing the world. I've got to get off my lazy bum and do my part as well.
What did you think of the book? What parts did you like? Anything really strike out at you? The whole book for me! Post your thoughts in the comment section. Lets get this discussion started!
The Holocaust has always been very interesting to learn about for me. I really enjoyed reading Edith's inside perspective and seeing more of the truth, more of what really happened to the Jews in Nazi Germany.
ReplyDeleteThis book was a strong reminder to me that everyday is a gift, full of blessings. I have lost a lot of material things recently, and my life has changed dramatically. It's easy for me to "mourn" for my old life, but really this change has been good for me. Edith's story reminds me of that. I enjoy many aspects of life each day that the Jewish people would have died for during the Holocaust- health, family, food, safety, freedom. I admire Edith's survival instincts- she was incredibly smart and courageous, compared to her ignorant, foolish German persecutors. I enjoyed the book so much that I am reading through it again. I always get more out of a book that way.
So Kate, what book comes next? =)
I tried to check this book out from the library when I read about your new book club, but they didn't have it! :( So they are ordering it in, and I"ll read it fairly soon hopefully. It sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI am glad I read this - thanks for the suggestion. Sad, inspiring, uplifting and depressing...
ReplyDeleteTruly a celebration of the human spirit.
